#gamemp3s needs you

Hi everyone. I'll get right to the point!

We're looking for help. #gamemp3s has taken several casualties (due mostly to marriage and World of Warcraft), so it's becoming more and more burdensome for our primary contributers to get music out there. Specifically, we need more resources to devote to the release process — ripping, tagging, doing NFOs, creating torrents and uploading them to the tracker, &c.

If anyone is interested in regular contribution, please let us know, whether here in the thread, in the IRC channel, or via e-mail (godai at j-rhythm dot com). Thanks!

Hiya. How exactly would this work? I might be interested in contributing. I already use Exact Audio Copy (set up with a recent LAME build, according to your guidelines and those posted in the Hydrogen Forums) to add to my media library, and Tag&Rename to manage it. Hell, I just finished ripping and tagging the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack I picked up today during my lunch break...

Well, i think what Godai is looking for is basically a 'permanent' kind of contributor. So far that means hanging out in the channel and... periodically putting out releases (i dunno how to describe the second part beyond what i already said in the first post). I haven't talked to Godai at length about this but i imagine regular contribution eventually warrants 'staff' status, for whatever that's worth.

A while ago I contributed all 20 mini-discs of Game Sound Museum ~Famicom Edition~, but it never got published.

Well, I once ripped all my soundtrack stuff and had them all tagged etc., but about half of it got rejected because it didn't fit the tastes of whoever was deciding back then, or what do I know...

Sorry, but nowadays I don't have the time and energy to do it all again. I appreciate whatever you put out there, but that really kind of killed my interersted in doing stuff myself.

I ripped some albums too which never got released. I also offered to contribute with albums on regular basis if it turned out okay, but was ignored for some reason. ;(

While I don't have the money to throw around to purchase new albums for you guys, I'm willing to help out in whatever other way I can.

I have some older albums that might be useful, I just don't know what programs you use, and the process involved. I use basic ripping programs, stuff you probably scoff at. Understandable. But if you gave me an idea of how to do it, I would happily lend my resources. I have a lot of game albums, and some anime music as well.

And whoever didn't put the 20-CD GSM up, should be sent to the minus world.

Like GenericLoser, I do not have the funds to purchase stuff to rip but I'd be more than willing to help out in some other way. barring sexual favors, of course.

Sorry, i don't know anything about the stuff you guys (gloomb, Freezard, &c.) are talking about. You'd have to take that up with Godai or whoever it was that was in charge at the time. :/

ps netcraft confirmed it

Yeah I sent it to Godai, but he never released it. It's so sad to see WoW take away something this good. That game has stolen away more lives than the plague. =(

For the record, I don't play WoW.

Secondly, the reason your rips didn't make it is the reason this request is going out. I do almost everything regarding releases. While I like to get contributions from people, the sheer amount is just too large for myself alone to deal with.

gloomb, I like your rips and still listen to alot of them, so if you ever want to send me anymore, I'm all for it.

^ I think that's spanish. It goes like this: "Hey! this is the only page I can safely download very good quality material that I can not find anywhere else. If there any way I can help with, it would be a plesure"

As for myself, I understand nothing of ripping, and I live in south america, so I've never even seen any of these osts for sale. As long as you continue your work, I'll keep seeding them once finished for 4 days as I have always been doing. Like this dude said, it's a quality material, it must be shared.

It sounds like quite a few people have submitted things but they never got posted, so what's the point of contributing if nothing comes of it. I know the albums I sent to you were ripped, tagged, and even included the .NFO file.

If user submitted albums aren't getting released, than why should others users submit more albums?

As i understand it, we have no lack of source material at all. It's not a matter of albums, it's a matter of people being able to do the rest of the work (like translating, tagging, &c).

I still've no idea why Godai didn't put yours out (beyond what he already said here) but that's the way the situation was described to me.

I can help with ripping CD's. I live in Korea, so I probably get stuff shipped to me faster than most people that don't live in Japan. As soon as I start studying Japanese again, I'll be able to help with translating and tagging.

Maybe I'll help if the albums I submitted get released. -_-; Not only did I rip, tag, and create NFOs for everything, but I uploaded them to my web space so that they could be downloaded (by Godia) in hopes that they would actually be released. This was a long while ago too. Not only did I submit all 20 mini-disc of Game Sound Museum ~Famicom Edition~ but I also submitted Super Mario Bros. Sound Collection, Happy! Mario 20th Anniversary which was included in an issue of Nintendo Dream. I'm annoyed because I put a lot of time into ripping, tagging, creating the NFOs, etc. just so I could contribute to #gamemp3s and nothing has come of it. I could see it not getting released if I just submitted the MP3s, but I did all the work too! The only thing that had to be done was to hav uploaded it whereever it goes and then add it to the tracker. >_

I leave in Indonesia. I do want to help providing anything that I can. Perhaps I cannot seed/leach albums, but I can tag/rename/upload whatever stored in my video game music listing (I regularly online twice a week). If some $$$ is needed to buy new albums, perhaps I can help, too (not much, though, as my own earn is not much either). Please take me in if that's possible...

Well really, I could help, but I'd rather not. I'm tied in money up, down and all around. My distro work is sloppy, I find myself short with time and I really, REALLY hate tagging. Although, it'd be pretty cool. Thanks for the offer you guys, but I'll pass. BTW I don't play WoW... Hehehe. Oh, did I mention I hate tagging?

Anyway, you guys are great so loyalty to the end :)

I'd always love to help. I can't invest too much time but I'm sure I could put in a few hours a week or more to help. I'm just not exactly sure what I'd have to do for tagging, doing NFOs, creating torrents and uploading them to the tracker, etc. I only know how to do a few of those off-hand, but the rest doesn't sound too hard. Could you give a little more info on exactly what would be expected from us?

^ passed moderation only because i loled

@DonMartione:
The current process goes something like...

1. Someone rips a CD and preferably scans the packaging (mostly this just helps us tag everything accurately, but we also offer the scans on the site as a bonus).

2. If necessary, Godai begins translating. This is accomplished partially using his unsurpassed intellect and partially using the interwebs.

3. Someone (often Godai again) goes over the MP3s and makes sure all the tags are the way we want them — specifically, artist/composer tags are right, spelling and capitalisation matches what's on the packaging, &c.

4. When the MP3 files themselves are finalised, an SFV file is created. An NFO and M3U are also made.

5. A torrent is made and uploaded to the tracker. People begin seeding.

Add me to the list of people that ripped, tagged, created nfo, everything exactly to specs and was essentially told to frack off, I wasn't needed.

This is what Godai told me in the channel: Even though some contributions (like the ones mentioned in this thread) do come to us pre-tagged and with an NFO and everything, he still has to check it all to make sure it's up to standards. Very rarely do they come perfect, even when they're submitted by our own staff. (For example, Razakin said 'i've never ever sent Godai a perfect nfo'.)

So when people send him a bajillion CDs, Godai still has to go through and make sure all the tags are right and the translations (if any) were done correctly and the capitalisation and stuff is right and all that jazz. I bet it must be pretty difficult to do anything at all if scans aren't provided (since very rarely is the packaging posted on-online verbatim).

so you see, godai really isn't such a scrooge after all

comment posted by lavender on 30 May

I think the community would feel better about helping with the site if the albums submitted by other users were "checked" and then released as they should be. When I submitted my CDs I didn't submit scans because there weren't any. One came from a magazine and the others had no track list information on the back. The best thing to do in this case is to just give them a quick read through, check them against a site like GMR, and release them.

comment posted by Cyantre on 30 May

Well, sure, you can check GMR all you want, but it's very possible that is wrong as well. I don't know the exact number, but I'm pretty sure Godai has entered in quite a few translations and corrections into GMR over the years. Using GMR is like using Wikipedia, heh.

While I'm all for releasing more albums, he's the reason #gamemp3s has had such high-quality releases, so there's a reason for everything. Let's hope we get some new staff members who can translate Japanese pretty well, as I'm pretty sure that's 90% of what's the problem here. Godai does it and does it pretty well, but if we had someone who was REALLY good at it and knew the Kanji well, this process would be so much quicker. :)

Except that Wikipedia is more accurate.

Well the releases I submitted were all from classic NES games like Super Mario Bros. which have be translated time and time again. It's not like some of the more obscure newer released that have never been translated before. I'm not sure how many people actually care about the track names that much anyway... with newer releases sure, but a lot of people change the track names anyway. It's been at least a year since I submitted my albums, and it doesn't take that long to figure out the track listing. If the track title says "Kinopio" and it should say "Toad", I don't think anyone is going to care. No matter how you slice it, it's still going to sound the same when you play it. Track names might be more important if the soundtrack is from some off-the-wall Japanese RPG that few have hear of, but with the albums I sent in it's all classic NES music from games everyone has played hundreds of times.

Cyantre: You know, it's not like your album is the only one in the queue, there's some amount between zero and thousand (probably a small or large exaggeration). Sure, maybe in the next few weeks or month, we will see your albums too.

And remember guys, free time isn't free usually. .P

Thanks for the info Lavender. However, I'm not sure what help our assistance would be. It seems Godai still has to double check everything to make sure it's correct before it gets released here.

Either way, I feel I can help out a little. I would only need to know the exact specs on how you want tags and nfo's to be.
